This group [started late October 2013] is aimed at those that can already run around 10K at about 11 minutes a mile pace or faster. It is specifically aimed at those that wish to train for Half or Full Marathons [either first timers or more experienced athletes] but shorter distances are catered for.
Runs take place in the Olympic Park/along local towpaths/Victoria Park/Hackney Marshes and beyond. There are toilets and secure bike lock-up facilities and a great cafe for after run socialising.
The group is unaffiliated to any Athletics Club so is open to ALL runners [no matter whether they already belong to a running club/group or not].
The group is lead by myself, Paul Lewis [an experienced Running Coach and 30 year road runner who now runs Ultra Marathons] and 3 other qualified Run England Leaders, who are all experienced Marathon runners. We are all local Sports Makers.
The group [along with my other Run England groups] will be entering races together on an on-going basis.
The group took part in the Jantastic challenge Jan-Mar 2014 as a team and finished as the top Run England group in the UK and in the top 10 teams out of 1,000 that took part overall.
Saturday 14 December
Cafod Nativity Run 2013
Six viewtube runners joined 20 runners from my other Run England groups to do this 5K/10K event.
Sunday 23 February
Hampton Court Half 2014
Thirteen viewtube runners completed the inaugural Hampton Court Half Marathon. For five runners it was their first Half Marathon.
Sunday 23rd March 2014
Fourteen of the viewtube runners joined nine of my other Run England runners to take part in the Sport Relief 6 mile run in the Olympic Park. Several surprised themselves with how much they have improved in the last 3 months.
Sunday 20 April
The London Marathon 2014
Three first time marathoners completed the London Marathon [as well as Leader Andre] as our first viewtube marathon graduates. Lots of us went to volunteer at the baggage area early in the morning then went down to the course to support.
Wednesday 21st May
The BHF Canary Wharf Jog
A great social event of multiple laps to complete either 5 or 10 Kilometres. As this is untimed/self-timed it is a good way to ease those newer to running into the spirit of taking part in events. Around 20 runners from my Run England groups came together to enjoy the lovely spring evening. Two runners were completing their first event/5K. So far three of the ladies from Queen Mary University have raised over £300 for charity.
During the 10 weeks Apr to June viewtube leaders trained around 70 runners for the inaugural Hackney Half Marathon, on behalf of Sweatshop Stratford. Four or five paced groups each Sunday completed runs building up from 6 to 13 miles. Several of the viewtube runners then also took part in the race on 22nd June.
Sunday 20 July
The National Lottery Newham London Anniversary Run 2014
Several viewtube runners took part in this 5 mile ‘fun run’. For a couple of runners this was their longest ‘race’ to date.
Saturday and Sunday 30 & 31 August
The Spitfire Scramble 2014
Over this weekend viewtube runners entered a team of 7 into the inaugural Spitfire Scramble 24 hour relay event in Hornchurch. Despite also completing marshalling duties for the entire event, the team managed to finish 8th out of 19 teams in the mixed category, with a total of just under 157 miles.
Runners are off doing their own events during September; from 10K to Marathon. But the viewtube Autumn/Winter Half/Marathon training programme starts again on Sunday 12th October.
Our next joint event is likely to be a Half in November.
